For decades, our city has vilified and harassed street vendors. For too long, the message to these vendors has been “you don’t belong.”
There are many reasons why that is the wrong message to send to these hardworking New Yorkers and why reform is necessary to increase opportunities for street vendors while still maintaining order on city streets.
...Currently, approximately 2,500 neighborhood entrepreneurs are on waiting lists for food-cart licenses. On Oct. 26, the City Council will hold a hearing on legislation that I introduced with Councilmen Mark Levine and Rafael Salamanca that would eventually double the number of food-vendor licenses and end arbitrary and outdated limits on permits.
