Alicja Kwade: Against the Run

AUGUST 20, 2015, NEW YORK, NY—Public Art Fund announces Against the Run, the first solo public art commission in the United States by Polish-born, Berlin-based artist Alicja Kwade. An uncanny adaptation of the classic New York City street clock, Kwade’s 16- foot-tall sculpture—specifically conceived for Doris C. Freedman Plaza—will display the correct time in a perplexing way. Simultaneously running in reverse while keeping a precise and accurate display of real time, Against the Run will challenge the conventions of time-telling by moving both forward in one sense, and backward in another. Alicja Kwade: Against the Run will be on view September 10, 2015 - February 14, 2016 in Doris C. Freedman Plaza, Central Park "Playfully confounding our expectations, Alicja Kwade’s conceptually elegant work forces us to look twice, rethink our assumptions, and see the most familiar of objects as if for the first time,” said Nicholas Baume, Public Art Fund Director & Chief Curator. Through subtle interventions with familiar objects like coins, pocket watches, lamps, mirrors, and wood pallets, Kwade’s work challenges the visual perceptions of the public, while also tackling deep-seated social conventions. Her work is grounded in science but contains an imaginative element as well, as if the artist were proposing different possibilities for what is real and not real. In this new work, she continues her exploration of space, movement, and time. As the clock face rotates to the left, one fraction every second, the second hand will tick to the right at the exact same speed and frequency. These two opposing actions will cause the second hand to appear as if it is frozen in place. With the minute and hour hands functioning as they would in a standard clock, Kwade’s clock may confound viewers, but it will always indicate the correct time. This exhibition is curated by Public Art Fund Director & Chief Curator Nicholas Baume.
