Neighborhood Clean-up Survey

Clean streets help make our neighborhoods healthier and more livable. Clean streets also make our business corridors more attractive and improve economic activity.

For the second straight year, funding I’m allocating through the NYC Cleanup Initiative will address some of the streets in District 7 that are in most need of better maintenance. To determine how best to deploy resources for this effort, I’m asking local residents to tell me where street clean-up is most needed.

Where do you want additional street cleaning and sweeping?

EXAMPLE: Amsterdam Avenue between 155 Street and 156 Street

Q: Where do you want additional street cleaning and sweeping?
A: All of Inwood. All of it. Broadway, Dyckman, every side street. Every street where a taxi driver decides to eat his dinner and then leave it at the curb. Every street where a livery cab driver decides to pee in a bottle and then leave it in the gutter (this happens a LOT). Restore twice a week cleaning, and nuke the entire neighborhood with sweepers and detergent.

Q: Where do you want additional street cleaning and sweeping?
A: 1. Columbus Avenue, 86th to 96th Street AND Amsterdam Avenue, 79th to 96th Street
For both of the above, garbage builds up, need more frequent pickup/emptying of the waste and recycling bins, which otherwise overflow onto the street, blow around, etc.
For Columbus Ave and to a lesser extent Amsterdam Ave, this has the effect of discouraging investment and rental of vacant storefronts. Also, with the bins full/overflowing, people have no place to dispose of rubbish, so it ends up being dropped outside collection zones.
    2. On Amsterdam Ave, especially 79th to 84rd Streets, east side of the Avenue, we need more sidewalk washing — I can’t tell you how many times (at least 2x weekly) I have encountered a pool of vomit, presumably from the bar patrons.

A: ALL OF CHINATOWN. I commute thru there on bicycle every day and it’s dangerous. there’s so much grease and food waste. It’s smells atrocious as well.
