Manufacturing has changed a lot since the passage of the city’s current zoning resolution in 1961. Some manufacturers moved out of the city entirely and new ones have sprung up. Google now houses its workers in a former Nabisco factory in West Chelsea. But for manufacturers that remain, the challenges are significant
The office of the Manhattan Borough President is bringing together manufacturers, business owners, workers, urban planners and community members for a “Symposium on Urban Manufacturing.” We’ll discuss the needs of manufacturers in multiple sectors – what they’re making, what kinds of spaces they need, and how zoning can help or hurt them. The issues surrounding the Garment Center will, of course, be one of our topics. Please RSVP at nycurbanmanufacturing.eventbrite.com.
